Meet Bill Hoff, a man with a passion for classic cars. His love for vintage racers led him to an incredible find: a 1924 Bentley 3-Liter TT race car. This is the story of how he chased this rare gem all the way to Land’s End, England’s westernmost point, where the land meets the wild Atlantic Ocean.
Land’s End is stunning but hard to reach. It’s remote, rugged, and far from city life. That’s where Bill’s adventure began.
Bill isn’t your average car collector. He’s earned wealth through patents but loves the thrill of driving old race cars in tough conditions. Imagine him in a bright yellow racing suit, standing in pouring rain, ready to race at Brooklands racetrack in Surrey, England. He’s all smiles!
During a 1,400-mile rally called Land’s End to John o’ Groats, Bill spotted the Bentley of his dreams. It was one of the first race cars built by W.O. Bentley. He had to have it. But getting a 1924 Bentley TT wasn’t easy. England protects its classic cars, and the owner wasn’t quick to sell.
“I called the owner and asked him to hold the car,” Bill says. “I flew to London and drove six hours to Land’s End. The owner said his legs couldn’t handle the car anymore.” Bill’s determination was unstoppable.
It took years to seal the deal. Bill bought the car in 2006. Then, he faced another hurdle: getting it out of England. He needed an export license. The English Ministry of Antiquities made him wait six weeks, but they finally said yes. The Bentley shipped from Southampton to Illinois.
Bill’s skills as an engineer shine through. He restored the Bentley into a perfect, one-of-a-kind race car. It’s a piece of history, showing Bentley’s early days.
