Kimi Raikkonen set the fastest lap of the day, but stopped on track later on, with Mercedes’ steering wheel being the biggest talking point, during the second day of F1 testing at Barcelona!
The whole session was overshadowed by an onboard camera on the Mercedes of Lewis Hamilton showing the steering wheel being pulled back onto straights and being pushed forward when heading into corners and heavy breaking points.
It is rumored that this device named DAS (Dual Active Steering) changes the toe of the car. Experts are saying that this will help warm up the Mercedes’ tyres when they are cold and on an out lap. Mercedes are confident of its legality but other teams will surely be asking clarification from the FIA on whether it is legal or not.
On the track, Kimi Raikkonen and Alfa Romeo were quickest with a 1:17.091. Once again, Racing Point looked strong with Sergio Perez setting a 1:17.347, as well as completing 145 laps.
Just like yesterday, Ferrari have not shown any pace with low fuel onboard with both Sebastian Vettel and Charles Leclerc setting laptimes in the 1:18’s.
Mercedes were also not prioritising low fuel runs with Lewis Hamilton setting a 1:18.387 and Valtteri Bottas setting a 1:19.307. An electrical issue meant that Mercedes and Bottas had to finish the day early.
The final day of testing for the week starts tomorrow at 8am.
