Marquez takes 5th win in a row after last lap drama with Maverick Vinales

Marc Marquez managed to fend of Maverick Vinales on the last lap to take yet another win in 2019! The Yamaha would crash on the last lap trying to dethrone Marquez.

After qualifying, it seemed that Vinales was going to pull away from the pack, after taking pole by over half a second. However, the opening half of the race was pure chaos with riders such as Vinales, Cal Crutchlow, Marc Marquez, Valentino Rossi, Jack Miller and even Andrea Iannone on an Aprillia taking the lead of the race.

When things started to settle down, Vinales pulled the plug with Marquez being the only rider to take on the challenge. On the last lap, Marquez made his move on the Yamaha down into Doohan corner. Vinales knew he had to make a move into turn 10 if he wanted to win and sadly for the Spaniard, he asked for too much throttle and crashed out.

This meant that 2nd place was inherited by Cal Crutchlow and the final podium spot was taken by home hero Jack Miller. Miller managed to fend off his rookie teammate Pecco Bagnaia who came home in a career best fourth. Behind the two Pramac’s was the Suzuki of Joan Mir and the Aprilia of Andrea Iannone. The whole top 6 can be very proud of their results today.

The three big names of Andrea Dovizioso, Valentino Rossi and Alex Rins came home 7th, 8th and 9th respectively. The other Aprilia of Aleix Espargaro rounded out the top 10.

One of the favourites for the win today would have been rookie sensation Fabio Quartararo. Sadly, the Frenchman and Ducati’s Danilo Petrucci both crashed out heavily at the Southern Loop. One of the big questions of the race is could Quartararo have taken his first win at Phillip Island?

However, he will have to wait another 7 days to try and take his maiden win at Sepang ahead of the Malaysian Grand Prix.
