Fabio Quartararo managed to edge out Maverick Vinales and Marc Marquez to pole position for tomorrow’s Thai Grand Prix, despite Quartararo and Marquez crashing on late flying laps!
Despite yesterday’s horror crash, Marquez was instantly on the pace and seemed the most likely to take pole. However, Marquez crashed on a flying lap that seemed like it would take him to provisional pole. Despite the crash, the Spaniard still managed to secure P3 on the grid.
Despite the huge straights at Buriram, Yamaha seemed the most likely to take pole position away from Honda and Marquez and that was proved right with the ever impressive Fabio Quartararo breaking the lap record with a 1:29.920. The Frenchman then decided to try and smash that lap out of the park but he pushed too hard and crashed.
This left the door wide open for Maverick Vinales to snatch pole away from the two men on the deck. The Spaniard tried his best but could only manage P2. Vinales’ teammate -Valentino Rossi- was looking fairly strong in the practice sessions only for the Italian to crash halfway through qualifying. When he was on a fast lap, he had to respect the yellow flags for Quartararo and Marquez which means ‘The Doctor’ will line up in a dissapointing P10.
Another Yamaha in Franco Morbidelli managed to finish in P4 with a trio of Ducati’s behind him with Danilo Petrucci taking a morale boosting P5 ahead of Jack Miller and Andrea Dovizioso.
Elsewehere, Cal Crutchlow will start in P13, thanks to being knocked out in the last seconds by an injured Pol Espargaro on the KTM.
