Marc Marquez took yet another win in 2019, after overtaking Fabio Quartararo on the last lap to extend his championship lead to 93 points!
Marquez was behind Quartararo, for at least 20 laps, trying to judge where to overtake the Frenchman. He left it till the last lap into turn 1 but Quartararo mugged him into turn 4. Sadly, Yamaha’s story of the season has been a lack of horsepower and Marquez used his power advantage to overtake the Petronas Yamaha before the braking zone into turn 8.
Maverick Vinales started from pole and led the first few laps. However, his mid race pace wasn’t strong enough to keep up with Marquez and Quartararo. The Spaniard managed to close the gap to under 2 seconds but it was too little too late. Vinales still managed to secure a comfortable podium, ahead of his teammate Valentino Rossi and the other Petronas Yamaha of Franco Morbidelli.
Despite winning last year, Ducati and Andrea Dovizioso struggled all weekend. The Italian finished in a lowly 6th with his two teammates of Michele Pirro and Danilo Petrucci well behind him. Pirro crashed out, with a few laps to go while Petrucci -once again- was disappointing down in 10th.
After yesterday’s heroics, Pol Espargaro was brought back down to earth, with a 7th place finish. Still a very strong race for KTM and Espargaro. He managed to finish ahead of the impressive Joan Mir in 8th and Jack Miller in 9th.
Mir’s teammate Alex Rins crashed out, halfway through the race as did Britain’s Cal Crutchlow. These crashes meant that Jorge Lorenzo could sneak a 14th place finish.
