Marc Marquez has taken his tenth consecutive pole position at the Sachsenring after setting a new lap record, a 1:20.195, two tenths quicker than Assen polesitter Fabio Quartararo. Assen race winner Maverick Vinales will start from third.
The big headline from Qualifying is that second in the championship, Andrea Dovizioso, will start the race from 13th on the grid after being knocked out of Q1 right at the death of the session by Takaaki Nakagami.
Alex Rins will head up the second row ahead of Jack Miller, the fastest Ducati on Saturday. An injured Cal Crutchlow will start from sixth. Franco Morbidelli will start at the head of the third row ahead of Pol Espargaro and Joan Mir.
Nakagami qualified tenth ahead of Valentino Rossi, who also made it through to Q2 despite crashing in Q1, while Danilo Petrucci ended last in the Q2 session after a fast crash towards the end of the session after being held up by Mir earlier in the session meaning he will start just one place ahead of teammate Dovizioso.
Lorenzo supersub Stefan Bradl will lineup 14th just ahead of the two Aprilias of Aleix Iannone and Andrea Iannone. A trio of KTMs then make up positions 17 through 19, with Hafizh Syahrin fastest ahead of Johann Zarco and Miguel Oliveira.
The two Reale Avintia will round out the field, Karel Abraham ahead of Tito Rabat, who crashed earlier in the session.
