Despite a poor start, the 2017 champion scored his third win of the season by using a safety car to get to the front of the field.
Rast qualified third but stalled his engine meaning he fell to the back of the running, however a clever use of his pitstop under an early safety car yielded great results, with a resounding lead of 34 seconds.
The safety car was caused by the WRT Audi driven by Fittipaldi being caught in an accident in the mid pack on lap four.
After coming out in tenth, leading all the other cars that had pitted, Rast then made progress through the field, eventually getting to the front and driving away until the flag.
“In spite of the poor start, we kept cool today and we made good use of the early safety car intervention. We had a good pace and then were able to dominate the race at the front of the field. The car was perfect throughout, a really big thank you to my team. All in all: my bad at the start, but luck with the safety car.”
Muller and Eriksson battled for the final podium slots, dueling for several laps until eventually Muller passed the Swede, who finished ahead of Duval and Spengler.
Juncadella scored the best result since Aston Martin joined the series, securing sixth, despite being a podium contender for much of the race. The car’s straight line disadvantage to the BMW proved to be an achilles heel, losing too much time to Muller.
