An emotional Danilo Petrucci fended off Marc Marquez and Andrea Dovizioso to take his first MotoGP win, in front of his home crowd at Mugello!
The Italian led for a fair amount of the race but on the last lap, he was swamped on the front straight by Marquez and Dovizioso. However, a very brave move on the inside of both Marquez and Dovizioso turned out to be the race winning move. A thoroughly deserved win for Petrucci, after all the speculation of his seat for next year!
Despite not winning the grand prix, Marc Marquez will be delighted that he managed to extend his championship lead on a Ducati track. It seemed after qualifying that Dovizioso would struggle to get a podium but the Italian managed to get a good start and was in the leading group after a couple of laps. Dovizioso finished 3rd and is now 12 points behind Marquez in the championship.
Another rider who struggled in qualifying was Suzuki’s Alex Rins who despite the lack of horsepower, managed to stay with the front 3 and finished in a very strong 4th. Rins even managed to lead a couple of laps and the Spaniard will be more than satisfied with that finish.
Another rider who will by happy with their result is LCR’s Takaaki Nakagami. The Japanese rider managed to overtake his teammate, on a year old bike to take a superb 5th.
There were many riders who crashed out with a few big names crashing out. Franco Morbidelli and Pecco Bagnaia were having very strong top 10 races but sadly both crashed out. Another Italian who crashed out was Yamaha’s Valentino Rossi who has had the worst possible race weekend. Ever since Rossi has been back in Europe, he has struggled to even get into Q2.
