F1 legend Niki Lauda passes away aged 70

Triple F1 world champion and legend of the sport Niki Lauda has passed away, it has been revealed.

The Austrian had been ill for some time and had undergone a lung transplant in August last year, he was then in hospital again earlier this year after contracting an infection. It is suggested that he had been receiving kidney dialysis recently as well.

Unfortunately it has now been revealed that he passed away on Monday, surrounded by his family.

“With deep sadness, we announce that our beloved Niki has peacefully passed away with his family on Monday…His unique achievements as an athlete and entrepreneur are and will remain unforgettable, his tireless zest for action, his straightforwardness and his courage remain. A role model and a benchmark for all of us, he was a loving and caring husband, father and grandfather away from the public, and he will be missed.”

His family said in a statement issued to Austrian media.
