The Mercedes F1 team arrived in China with a new nose and front wing, but were told by the FIA that it does not meet the regulations and will not be able to use it in qualifying or the race.
As we all know, the regulations were changed for this season to make the front wings less complex in an attempt to create closer racing. The intricate wings meant it was more difficult for following cars in dirty air, and thus, less easy to overtake.
At this point, we don’t have any more information as to the exact reasoning for the decision, but it’s also understood that the team expected it and will revert to a previous design.
Despite winning both of the first two races, Mercedes are trying to eek out pace where possible to cancel out the straight line speed advantage shown by the Ferrari-powered teams.
