Repsol Honda’s Marc Marquez took his 5th MotoGP title after Andrea Dovizioso crashed out with 2 laps to go!
Marquez made the race winning pass at turn 9 with 4 laps to go. Dovizioso led most of the race after starting from pole position but Marquez spent no time to catch up to Dovizioso. It seemed that there would be a repeat of 2017 but Dovizioso crashed at turn 10, with 2 laps to go.
Cal Crutchlow was able to keep up with the front 2 for the first half of the race. However, he just didn’t have the pace and was seemingly defending for a podium from Alex Rins. Thanks to Dovizioso’s crash though, it was a battle for 2nd which the Brit won. Rins would bring home another impressive podium.
It seemed that Rins’ teammate Andrea Iannone would have a chance of a podium but like Dovizioso, he lost the front end at turn 10.
One of the big shocks of the race was Alvaro Bautista claiming 5th for the Angel Nieto team. The superbikes bound rider is rumored to replace Jorge Lorenzo at Phillip Island.
Yamaha struggled, once again with Valentino Rossi claiming 4th but they were legitimately behind Ducati, Honda and Suzuki. Johann Zarco could only manage 6th and Maverick Vinales 7th.
Elsewhere, Bradley Smith claimed a very respectable 12th position and Suzuka 8 hours winner Katsuyuki Nakasuga claimed points on his wildcard run in 14th ahead of full time compatriot Takaaki Nakagami.
