Youngster George Russell has signed with Williams F1 for the 2019 season, it was announced today.
Russell is a Mercedes protege, currently leading the F2 championship ahead of Alexander Albon and Lando Norris. He is now the third Brit announced for the grid next year, definitely good news for the home of motorsport!
It is still yet to be announced who will partner the F1 rookie, but it seems likely at this point that it will be either Sirotkin or reserve driver Robert Kubica. Unfortunately it would suggest Esteban Ocon has had another avenue closed for him for 2019 as most do not expect Williams to take two Mercedes affiliated drivers.
However, common sense would suggest that they do take Ocon in exchange for some discounted parts from Mercedes to get the team back on form. They will be hoping for drastic improvement for 2019 after a terrible run of form this year.
The announcement leaves just four seats unconfirmed for next year, (Force India with two – of course Stroll is expected to fill one, Toro Rosso with one and the other Williams).
Keep your eyes peeled!
