Valtteri Bottas had yet another strong qualifying at Sochi by taking pole position for the Russian Grand Prix!
Mercedes have dominated the weekend and that impressive pace continued into qualifying. It seemed that Hamilton was nailed onto pole position after his pace in practise but Bottas -who has never qualified outside the top 3 in Sochi- made the most of a mistake from Hamilton to take his second pole position of the year.
Ferrari were absolutely nowhere and could only qualify 3rd and 4th with Vettel claiming 3rd after a mistake from Kimi Raikkonen on his fast lap. Red Bull could have punished Ferrari if it was not for their engine penalties. They’ll start at the back along with both Torro Rosso’s and Fernando Alonso.
This gave an opportunity to Haas, Sauber and Force India. Kevin Magnussen qualified 5th with Esteban Ocon 6th and Charles Leclerc 7th. Behind Leclerc was Perez, Grosjean and Ericsson.
It seemed that Renault would’ve took an opportunity with all the grid penalties but instead, they didn’t run in Q2 so they qualify 11th and 12 but with a new set of fresh tyres.
