In a somewhat unsurprising move, McLaren have welcomed Renault driver Carlos Sainz Jr to their ranks in place of Fernando Alonso, who will retire at the end of the season.
The 23 year old Spaniard from Madrid has signed a multi-year deal with the team.
Zak Brown said:
“We’re incredibly excited to have Carlos join us as a McLaren Driver. We’ve been assessing him for some time now and rate him very highly among the next generation of young talent emerging through the ranks in Formula 1.”
That’s some decent praise considering the strong youngsters on their way to the top!
“I’ve been a McLaren fan for as long as I can remember. It’s a great name in the sport with an incredible heritage…I’d like to thank everyone at McLaren for giving me the opportunity to fulfil a childhood dream.”
The move means the Red Bull seat left empty by Ricciardo is still free, although it is widely expected to be filled by Pierre Gasly.
McLaren are still yet to confirm their full driver lineup, speculation has said that Vandoorne will lose his place to either promising youngster Lando Norris or son of investor, Lahtifi.
