Marc Marquez extended his championship lead to 41 points after winning at Assen in one of the best MotoGP races in years!
Marquez wasn’t at the front for most of the race but crucially, he took the lead with 5 laps to go from Andrea Dovizioso and decided to up his pace. No one could catch him in the last laps.
Early on, it was Jorge Lorenzo who took the lead despite starting down in 10th. However, within the first couple of laps, there was drama! 2nd place Valentino Rossi rammed Lorenzo with 22 laps to go but they somehow both stayed on!
A 9 bike group emerged for the lead with Lorenzo leading the first half of the race. However, while battling with his teammate, Andrea Dovizioso, he used up his tyres and only managed to finish in 7th. Dovizioso would finish in 4th position after an incident with Valentino Rossi at turn 1. Rossi would finish behind Dovizioso in 5th position ahead of Great Britain’s Cal Crutchlow.
Alex Rins would finish in a career best 2nd position after passing Maverick Vinales on the last lap! This stunning result is Suzuki’s best finish since Vinales won at Silverstone in 2016! Vinales would complete the podium with a much needed podium.
The 9 bike group eventually turned into a 7 bike group as Iannone and Zarco fell off the pace but the racing was still breathtaking! At one point, Marquez and Vinales were both off the track at turn 9 after battling for the lead.
Elsewhere, there was another big group behind the leaders all battling for points and some notable results were Alvaro Bautista in 9th position, Pol Espargaro in 12th and Dani Pedrosa in 15th!
