Jorge Lorenzo dominated the Catalunya Grand Prix while teammate Andrea Dovizioso once again crashed out!
Jorge Lorenzo superbly took pole in qualifying, yesterday and was one of the favourites for victory today. Marq Marquez made the best start off the front row and led the early couple of laps. However, Lorenzo used the Ducati power to overtake Marquez on the front straight and didn’t look back from there to take his 2nd win in the space of 2 weeks!
Marq Marquez was keeping up with Lorenzo but it all changed at the halfway point of the race. Behind Marquez, in 3rd, Andrea Dovizioso crashed out at turn 5 and has now ruined his championship chances. Marquez then seemed to accept the 20 points after one of his championship rivals crashed out and Lorenzo lies 7th in the standings.
Behind Marquez was his nearest championship rival, Valentino Rossi. The veteran didn’t have the pace of the front two and had a very lonely race but he is only 29 points behind Marquez and we now head to one of Rossi’s favourite tracks in Assen.
Only 13 riders finished on the lead lap and reasons for the lack of finishers included Tito Rabat’s bike catching fire, Jack Miller retiring his bike and Takaaki Nakagami taking out Bradley Smith!
Elsewhere, Cal Crutchlow bought home a brilliant 4th position ahead of Dani Pedrosa, Maverick Vinales and Johann Zarco.
