Round 5 of the MotoGP calendar is at historical Le Mans around the Bugatti circuit.
Marq Marquez will want to continue his impressive opening to the season and hunt down win number 3. The Spaniard will want to improve on last year’s result where he crashed out of the race.
Last year’s winner Maverick Vinales lies 20 points behind Marquez with only one podium to his name so far. In contrast to last season where Vinales scored his 3rd win of the season and was the early favourite for the title.
Despite being 3rd in the standings, he is not the top Yamaha in the championship. Johann Zarco scored his first podium in his MotoGP career at Le Mans last year but he still hasn’t been able to take his first victory. He has come close on so many occasions and for sure will be a strong contender for victory on Sunday in front of his home crowd. Zarco lies 2nd in the standings, 12 points behind Marquez.
Cal Crutchlow, after leading the championship in Austin, has crashed out of the previous two races where he was on course for at least two podiums and now lies 7th in the standings. If Crutchlow wants to contend for the championship, then he will have fight for podiums every race weekend.
A man who is under a huge amount of pressure is Jorge Lorenzo. If 2017 was a bad year for the 4 time world champion, then 2018 is a disaster. He is 20th in the standings after he collided with Repsol Honda’s Dani Pedrosa and teammate Andrea Dovizioso. Dovizioso (who is now 5th in the standings) blamed Lorenzo for the crash and surely will not be at Ducatti next season. He now needs to prove to other teams that he is worth the money.
